The Future’s So Bright...
The Democrats face the easiest possible choice in years. Joe Biden is so clearly the person for the job. Is he perfect? No candidate is. Is he a bit too centrist given the ascendance of the Left? Yes. But the job here is to take out Donald J. Trump. He’s a defined rival.
When you rebuild a sports team, your goal isn’t to design the perfect squad. It’s to knock out the champion. You plan matchups accordingly, whether you’re the Lakers aiming for the Warriors or the Dodgers aiming for the Red Sox (or the Reds aiming for the Brewers!) or the Rams aiming for the Patriots.
Michigan. Pennsylvania. Wisconsin.
That’s the ballgame. Win back those three states and it’s over.
Right now, the Democrats are like a football team that just scored a touchdown (winning the House back in the 2018 midterms). It’s the fourth quarter and we’re down 21–20. Do you go for the two-point conversion or the point-after kick? Hey, this is an opportunity to think big and pick a Far Left candidate. That’s the two-point conversion — go for the win. But it’s also harder. If you screw it up, you lose. I say go for the safe bet here — kick the extra point, tie up the game, and try to win in overtime (2024).
Blue-Collar Joe was born in Pennsylvania and can go to every county in the country, including the South, and connect with voters. Naturally, he won’t win every state, but he won’t get booed offstage, either. He may even win my home state of Ohio.
Sure, he’s prone to gaffes, but I think Trump has proven those clearly don’t count the same way they once did. (Unless Trump’s the exception that proves the rule?) Plus, the moderates in those Midwestern states are generally unlikely to care about what the media refer to as gaffes.
Bye-Den.
I’m not only playing identity politics here: I have maintained for over a year that a Joe Biden / Kamala Harris ticket is unstoppable. Biden can make it clear that he intends to stay for four years (given the age concerns) and have Harris by his side and ready to run in 2024.
We Got Next.
Biden, a man with eight years supporting Barack Obama. Harris, the first potential black (and don’t forget, Indian!) woman as VP, in perfect position to take over in 2024. The liberals and a lot of moderates, who never thought Trump would win, will turn out in droves to support the Democratic candidate, almost no matter what, even if neither Biden or Harris is quite as liberal as many on the Left want. Not yet writing off Tulsi or Warren or Gillibrand or Landrieu or Beto or Bernie or Booker or Brown (a lotta Bs) or Klobuchar (whom I like a lot).
In fact, I like a lot of the candidates, potential and declared. And I think there are multiple routes to run here. But Biden/Harris is just so obvious to me that anyone who doesn’t agree with me is a total and complete moron. Your thoughts?
